What this is for
Share a short period of child-led play. Make a den, picnic or bridge with ordinary toys, folded paper or the printed pieces. There is no winning route or emotional debrief.
What you will need
- Playmat and character pieces, optional
- Adult help with scissors
- Blocks, folded paper or familiar toys
Try it in your own way
- 1
Offer the materials and let your child choose where to begin.
- 2
Join their idea, or quietly watch if they prefer.
- 3
Ask before adding something: ‘May I put this here?’ Accept no.
- 4
If something falls naturally, offer rebuilding, another idea or finishing.
- 5
Give a gentle warning before ending and put the creation somewhere safe if possible.

Share a picnic Draw pretend food. Follow the picnic plan, ask before adding a piece and accept "no". Build a bridge Use blocks or folded paper across a pretend stream. You can change the route or make something else. Begin again, or finish If something falls naturally, offer rebuilding together, a different idea or stopping. Never deliberately spoil something to make a lesson. A gentle ending Comment more than you question: "You made a doorway." Give a little warning: "One more part, then we'll put this somewhere safe."
